Here's how to begin using the keyword tool in AdWords:
 
1. Click on the top bar entitled Reporting and Tools.
2. In the dropdown menu click on Keyword Tool.
3. Then click on the Columns tab. From that dropdown menu, put a check in the box beside:
     - Competition
     - Global Monthly Searches
     - Local Monthly Searches
     - Approximate CPC  
4. Click on the Apply button.  
5. Then click on the Keyword Ideas button. 
  
 
 

 Online Searches

 
Here's how to see what people are searching for online:
 
1. Enter in the 'keyword phrase' you would like to search in the 'Find Keywords' box & click on the 'search' button.
 
2. The green bar tells you the level of 'competition' from advertisers wanting visitors from these online searches sent to their websites.
Google has changed this green bar now to read High, Medium and Low. You want to look for Keywords that have a Medium to High demand.
If it's Low, it means there are not many advertisers who are willing to pay for leads based on that keyword phrase.
 
3. Local Monthly Searches are taken from your country's stats and are based on a 12 month average.
A good search volume would be 100,000 searches and over. However there are no rules.
10,000 searches can be good depending on your target market. An example of this would be if your niche was specific to a location like 'painters in Toronto.'
 
4. The Approximate CPC (Cost Per Click) indicates what advertisers have paid Google for the keyword phrase to send a visitor to their website. 

 
 

 Long Tailed Keyword Phrase


You need to find a Long Tailed Keyword Phrase you want to focus the content of your website on.
 
To do this you need to look for a 'Long Tailed Keyword Phrase' with:

1.  High Competition.
 
2.  High Local Monthly Searches - 50,000 to 100,000, although 10,000 to 50,000 may work just as well for some website topics too. When you get in the 500,000 + range it gets very competitive to get your website displayed by the search engines.
 
3.  High Approximate CPC - The higher the Cost Per Click dollar amount, the more money you make when a visitor from your site clicks on a Google Ad.

Domain Name  When you're looking for a Keyword Phrase for your website, also ask yourself if that keyword phrase would be a good website name, commonly known as a doman name.

Your website can have several domain names pointing to it and several different .com, .net., ca .mobi, extensions.
It's always good to have a Keyword Enriched domain name, even if it's not the name you would put on your business card.

This is a domain name created for the search engines to read to know what your website is about.
When your website content and domain name match, it helps the search engines index your website better,
making it more likely to be displayed in online searches.
 

 Finding The Advertisers

 
To see which advertisers are paying for their ads to be displayed, click on that keyword phrase in Bbue type.
 
There will be a dropdown, click on 'Google Search.'
 
A box will pop up displaying the Google search results for that keyword phrase.
 
The ads are usually displayed to the right and at the top of the Google page in a shaded area with the word 'ads' in small grey type. Sneaky.
 
When you click on the ad, it will take you to the advertiser's website and you will then know exactly who is paying Google for the click. You may wish to contact these advertisers when you want to set up your own referral program.
